SEIU NJ Backs Menendez for US Senate
Workers, leaders cite Menendez’s strong voting record for working families.

Westfield -  In the heart of his opponent’s backyard, the leaders of  SEIU NJ announced their commitment to launch an aggressive campaign to mobilize their New Jersey members for Menendez.

Kevin Brown, President of the SEIU NJ State Council, said “Menendez has fought hard for working families in Washington on critical issues like living wages, health care, and long-term care.” He added, “Now it’s our turn to fight for him to ensure he continues to be our voice in Washington.”  Read more.

Building Service Workers Win Prevailing Wage Law
Local 32BJ SEIU members helped raise the standard for working families by fighting for and winning a state ordered prevailing wage initiative.

Although the legislation targets state buildings, the new wage standard will force more employers in the surrounding areas to pay competitive wages to building service workers.

SEIU 1199 New Jersey members and United for Quality Care spearheaded a 3-year campaign to pass landmark legislation in Trenton (The Quality Care Improvement Fund Act).  This legislation leverages state Medicaid dollars to secure federal matching funds.  As of FY 2006 $95 million dollars have been distributed to raise standards. 

Nursing homes can now use this funding to improve staffing, training, pay better wages to help reduce the alarming turn over rate of nursing home caregivers in the state.  Find out more.
